Nissan S14 R30 VR6 Turbo

An extraordinary drift project from Crazy Build and Steffen Saad: a Nissan S14 chassis reborn around a purpose-built R30 VR6, with Racing Custom Parts components at the heart of the build. From SR20 failures and a championship-winning 1JZ to an Elite-ready VR6 weapon producing 810 hp at the wheels.

The Story

The story behind this car is quite a long one. It all started with a dream: owning a chassis and building a car capable of pushing the limits of drift further and further.

Originally, the car was powered by an SR20. A legendary engine, but one that quickly proved unreliable when it came to running high power levels. I eventually broke two of them.

I then decided to start again with a new setup, with the help of several partners, and built a 1JZ-powered setup. It turned out to be an extremely successful choice: the engine never let me down and allowed me to win the French Drift Championship in the Leisure category.

The 1JZ was therefore an excellent solution. However, in order to keep progressing and eventually compete with the cars running in the top-level Elite category, I needed to take things even further. The cost of such a setup was unfortunately becoming too high for me.

That was when Crazy Build, aka Corentin, came up with a rather unusual idea: putting a VR6 into the car. It was a completely crazy idea at the time, as such a setup had never been built in the world of drift at this level. The project therefore started in 2023, with a simple goal on paper, but an extremely complex one to achieve: turning a VR6 into a true drift weapon capable of competing with the setups running in the Elite category.

Faced with all the technical challenges I presented to Crazy Build, Racing Custom Parts quickly became THE solution to make this project possible, through the design and manufacture of many of the custom components required to build this machine. We therefore sold the complete 1JZ setup in order to finance the beginning of this new adventure and start again from a clean sheet.

Building the VR6

Crazy Build then took care of the complete engine assembly, with a preparation that he deliberately keeps secret, supervised by Perf&Classic. The goal was to build an R30 capable of producing around 800 horsepower at the wheels, while keeping the engine responsive and providing a wide enough usable powerband for the specific demands of drifting.

The chosen base is a 3.2 VR6, combined with a 2.8 crankshaft, forged connecting rods and a complete set of L19 and ARP hardware. To improve the reliability of the setup, a girdle designed by Racing Custom Parts was used to reinforce the bottom end.

Racing Custom Parts also supplied the components required to build the custom intake manifold, including an intake runner with the RCP flange and throttle-body support, as well as an adapter plate allowing the engine to be mated to a BMW GS653DZ gearbox.

Crazy Build then handled the complete assembly and the custom fabrication of all the components required for the installation: intake and exhaust manifolds, engine mounts, gearbox mount, boost system, fuel system, as well as a large part of the integration required to turn this VR6 platform into a true competition engine. The wiring and engine calibration were carried out by Perf&Classic, with the complete ECUMaster engine management system supplied by FMIC.

Re-engineered Car

The list of parts and modifications carried out on this car is extremely long, because nothing was left to chance. The cooling system was notably relocated to the rear of the vehicle. To build this installation and all of its peripherals, we mainly used components supplied by FMIC, from the various cooling-system components to the injector management and the elements required for the engine management system.

For the forced-induction system, we chose a BorgWarner 369 SXE, supplied by Turbozentrum, with the goal of finding the best possible compromise between power, response and usable powerband. Every component of the setup was therefore designed around the same objective: to build a car capable of producing serious power while remaining usable and reliable under the very specific conditions of drifting.

The Result

After months of design, fabrication, assembly and development, the final result ultimately exceeded the original target. The VR6 now produces 810 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque at the wheels, with a usable powerband of approximately 4,200 to 8,100 rpm, reaching a maximum engine speed of 8,100 rpm.

But beyond the numbers, it is the overall consistency of the package that makes the difference. The combination of the engine build, the girdle, the many custom components developed specifically for this project and the work carried out by each partner has resulted in an engine that is extremely powerful, responsive and reassuringly reliable.

To date, around ten outings have been completed with this configuration. And after every single one, the conclusion remains the same: the setup continues to deliver the same level of performance and behaves just as it did during the first tests, without showing any weaknesses despite the demands placed on it.

This project started with an idea that could have seemed completely unrealistic: making a VR6 work in an S14 chassis built for high-level drifting. Today, this engine produces 810 horsepower and 900 Nm, revs to 8,100 rpm, offers a wide usable powerband and continues to perform flawlessly run after run.

An extraordinary project, made possible through the collaboration between Crazy Build, Racing Custom Parts, Perf&Classic, FMIC, Turbozentrum, and everyone who contributed, directly or indirectly, to building this machine.
